Analysing the latest statistics released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) always makes for essential reading for fleet managers and commercial vehicle drivers alike. With the most up-to-date figures released for January 2017, leading dealer David Spear Commercial Vehicles is here to provide their expert insight.

“The latest SMMT figures highlight a positive start to the New Year, with van registrations on the up. In January 2017 alone, van registrations increased by 1.2%, which may seem modest but has resulted in some 21,363 new light commercial vehicles making their way onto UK roads. Heavy vans, with a weight of 2.5 to 3.5t, witnessed an even greater increase with registrations rising by 5.6% in comparison with the same period in 2016. This is great news for the British economy as vans and trucks remain the backbone of UK business,” said Owner David Spear.

In addition to delivering the best quality used, new and nearly new commercial vans, pick-ups are also an integral part of David Spear’s stock, and it appears that 2017 will see more registrations in this area too, building on the successful year that the vehicle type experienced in 2016. According to SMMT, demand for pick-ups remains high and is continuing to rise with a 28.9% increase in registrations in January 2017.

“The increase in registrations, from the modest growth of light commercial vehicles and heavy vans to the more significant rises seen in pick-up registrations, means that 2017 is certainly off to a positive start. Based on the latest figures, the sector is all set to continue its success. Business confidence is increasing despite the looming uncertainty associated with the Brexit, and the government must take steps to ensure this growth is maintained,” concluded David.
